The easiest of motoring companions. introductionthe toyota highlander has become the best-selling vehicle of its type, a car-based midsize sport-utility vehicle. Its independent suspension is set up for comfort and ride quality as a priority. The 2005 toyota highlander adds standard features that were optional. Optional curtain-style airbags and side-impact airbags are designed to protect passengers' heads and torsos in a side impact or rollover. the highlander remains the easiest of motoring companions. Getting in and out is easy due to the relatively low floor height. Its flexible interior makes it easy to various combinations of people and cargo. Seating for five comes standard, with an optional third-row seat to carry up to seven passengers, though they'd be cramped. The third row folds flat and the second-row seat folds nearly so, revealing 80 cubic feet of cargo space, more than a toyota 4runner. The bumper cover has sharp lines molded into it, so its shape is better defined than before. The grille's horizontal bars are bold and well defined, while the various elements of the light clusters seem to blend together more smoothly. Toyota design philosophy tends toward conservative appearance changes, and the highlander lacks a cutting-edge design such as that of the nissan murano. Highlander's front and rear overhangs are relatively large, tending more toward a station wagon look. entry, both for cargo and for people, is easier in the highlander than in truck-based suvs. With its more car-like step-in and lift-into, the highlander is even friendly to wearers of tight skirts. Not so the usual truck-based suv. There are walk-in steps and a second-row sliding seat to help access the third row of seats. while the toyota 4runner is basically a truck, the highlander is essentially a car. Like a car, the highlander uses unibody construction rather than having a separate frame. Two-wheel-drive versions are front-wheel drive, not rear-wheel drive. The 4runner is the opposite of each of those. For commuting and transporting the family, the highlander is the better, more comfortable choice. Properly equipped, highlander can tow up to 3,500 pounds, not all that much by truck standards. interiorfew vehicles are easier to get in and out of than the toyota highlander. Neither climbing up nor stepping down is required. This makes the highlander one of the most convenient trucks on the planet for running daily errands. These seats are flat and lean, but supportive and comfortable and adjust to suit various-size drivers. Their higher ride height provides a commanding view of the road. The sloping hood of the highlander makes the forward view even more encompassing. the second row seats up to three passengers, but is better for two. The center of the second-row seat folds down into an arm rest with cup holders, adding comfort, and the seats recline for additional comfort. It's split 60/40 and folds down with a cleverly articulated seat bottom. It folds fairly flat but not perfectly flat. The second-row seat slides forward to make access to the third row easier, and to provide more legroom for third-row passengers. toyota intends for the third row to be used only occasionally. As average-sized adults, we found sitting in the third row uncomfortable. This relatively cramped situation makes the third-row seats best for short trips or kids. Also, the side-curtain airbags do not protect third-row passengers as they do in a toyota sienna minivan. Purely for transporting people, a minivan will always be better. Power window buttons are right there on the doors. Radio and heater controls use simple dials and amply sized buttons and operate intuitively. V6 models come with aluminum interior accents. Limited models come with simulated silver and burled maple wood-grain dash trim and door scuff plates, but the wood grain trim on the center stack looks like fake wood. The standard climate control is a single-zone system. the shifter is uniquely positioned more as a part of the dash than on a central console. This opens up the space between the front seats. 2009 toyota corolla review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger and roomier. introductionthe 2009 toyota corolla is a new car, the 10th generation of the world's most popular passenger car. More than 30 million have been sold in more than 140 different countries. It feels more like a small car than an econobox, as much a smaller camry as anything else. Upgrading to the corolla le includes power windows and door locks. Finally, there are two sportier models, the corolla s which looks the part and has some seat and chassis upgrades, and the corolla xrs which brings a bigger engine, brakes, and tires to the party. no matter the model, the toyota corolla is a hop-in-and-go kind of car. The standard model, simply called corolla, is the least expensive yet includes fabric upholstery, air conditioning, cd/wma/mp3 xm-ready radio, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, six-way manual driver seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, outside temperature gauge, power mirrors, and engine immobilizer. Six airbags and abs are standard. Options are the same as the standard, plus 16-inch alloy wheels and remote keyless entry. xle is the lux-like corolla, and builds on le with 16-inch steel wheels and covers, wood grain trim, optitron instruments, variable intermittent wipers, sliding lid center console, keyless entry, seatback pockets and better radio. The option list swells to include those above not standard, plus moonroof, alloy wheels, eight-speaker jbl audio system, and navigation, though the latter two can not be combined. the s is the economy sporting model, with color-matched spoilers, fog lamps, black headlight housings, leather-trimmed steering wheel, and sport front seats the upgrades from the base model. Options are extensive and include everything mentioned for standard, le, xle, and leather upholstery. xrs is the top of the line. It's upgraded with the 2. 4-liter engine, wider, 17-inch tires on alloy wheels, electronic stability control, trunk spoiler, rear disc brakes, strut tower brace, optitron gauges, cruise, leather shifter and steering wheel, and chrome interior accents. Heated mirrors, two radio upgrades, navigation, power locks/windows, moonroof, and leather upholstery are among the options. safety features that come standard on all corolla models include six airbags: dual frontal, front side-impact (for torso protection), and side curtain airbags (for head protection). Electronic stability control and traction control are optional and we recommend getting them. The light housings are the most similar, driven by both styling heritage and modern safety standards, the shoulders over the wheel openings are more pronounced, and the roofline as it drops behind the rear door is more formal. However, it's immediately recognizable as a toyota, and from behind as a corolla. messing with success is difficult, so after selling more than 30 million corollas around the world toyota kept the update conservative. Others will appreciate the simple lines. Those same simple lines help keep collision repair prices from extremes, which means lower insurance rates. both the s and xrs receive different lower nose and tail sections, the area around the fog lamps bearing a distant similarity to the lexus is, and trunk spoilers. It's a look that works better on the xrs by virtue of its larger wheels. It also works best on darker colors because the added panels appear more integrated. Fit and finish both appear to a high level for such an inexpensive car. the basis for the corolla also forms the base of the matrix, and the all-new 2009 pontiac vibe. The corolla is within a few inches of most of its competitors, the mistubishi lancer being among the longer and the honda civic amongst the shorter. Nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger, but the nissan versa is as likely to face off against lesser-priced corolla models. interiorwith such a large audience, the 2009 toyota corolla skips the fringes and focuses on a pleasant interior designed more to offend no one than to excite just a few. Hop in and everything seems rental car simple without the all-too-frequent guilt that comes from not popping for an upgrade from this week's special. As one example, the cloth upholstery appears two-tone at first between bolsters and cushions, but it's just an illusion caused by the texturing. materials and patterns are understated, speaking to the practical side without ignoring basic needs for tactile comfort, and they vary appropriately by model. The wood grain trim on the xle adds warmth not often seen in compacts and helps break up color monotony. We're surprised that the leather upholstery option, available on the s and xrs models with their sport seats, is not offered on the xle, especially since some competitors like honda's civic do. On the other hand, the other trims aren't subject to glare reflections that the faux wood is. a conventional dash frames speed and engine revs with fuel and ancillary data, the xle and xrs employing electroluminescent optitron gauges popularized by lexus for utmost clarity. Controls used often are on the tilt/telescoping steering column stalks, with others on dash and center stack. Front seats mix comfort and ease of entry and egress nicely, though the sporting models' heavier bolsters will be appreciated by anyone not shopping at the big 'n tall store. Space of 12. 3 cubic foot is about average and isn't hindered by black boxes and big speakers hanging down under the back window. 2004 nissan titan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Is this america's best full-size pickup?. introductiona man and his truck. I smiled in understanding. Most certainly pickups inspire in their owners, male or female, an emotion rarely generated by other wheeled objects. That's the task nissan has set for itself with what it terms the first truly full-size pickup from a company other than ford, dodge, or general motors. Titan is significantly larger than the toyota tundra, which is not quite full-size. nissan has done its research, benchmarking favored pickups and edging the bar higher for its titan. The titan boasts best in class headroom; best in class torque; best in class interior volume (for the crew cab); best 4x4 ground clearance; best 4x4 approach angle; largest in class 4x4 tires. Titan can tow up to 9,500 pounds, putting it at the top of the class alongside the new ford f-150. the titan features a new 5. 6-liter v8 and five-speed automatic that deliver dazzling response. Its handling is equally responsive, making it among the most enjoyable of the full-size half-ton pickups. Brakes, suspension, drivetrain all feel refined. This is a serious pickup that pleases all the senses. titan boasts clever innovations that improve on the traditional pickup bed, such as the factory-applied spray-in bedliner and a c-channel tie-down system. The rear doors on the king cab open nearly 180 degrees for quick access. the titan was designed in california. It's built at nissan's new plant at canton, mississippi, and its new v8 is built at nissan's decherd, tennessee, production facility. lineupnissan titan is available in two body styles: king cab with a 6-foot, 7-inch bed or a crew cab with a larger cabin and conventional doors and a 5-foot, 6-inch bed. all titans boast nissan's new 5. 6-liter v8 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. All models are available in 2wd and 4wd versions. three trim levels are available, xe, se, and le. The xe comes standard with a split front bench seat with a fold-down armrest storage bin and split pop-up rear seat; xe comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, but has manual door locks and wind-up windows. Se adds captain's chairs, a better grade of cloth, 18-inch wheels, power everything, and host of other features; se is expected to be the most popular trim level. Le comes with leather front seats. All models come with a high level of standard equipment including features such as a tire-pressure monitor, automatic headlamps, cruise control, and a cd stereo. a navigation system is optional and comes bundled with a rear park-assist system. Also optional is a package that includes front-seat side-impact air bags and curtain air bags, always good choices in tall vehicles like suvs and trucks. The utility bed package includes a clever channel system in the bed for flexible tie-down configurations to fit a wide range of cargo; a lockable storage system in the outside of the bed; tailgate lighting; a power point at the rear; and that factory-applied spray-in bedliner. Nissan says its plan is to get the basics right and then build on that with a new level of style and innovation. We think the nissan titan has achieved those goals. walkaroundfor that all-important view in someone's rearview mirror the titan styling bellies over toward the dodge ram school of intimidation rather than ford or chevy. (the ford f-150, deemed almost too pretty in its present guise, has also shifted toward ram ruggedness for its new version.) the titan's blocky front-end view with its twin sloping chrome bars angling down across a bee-comb radiator says 'here's a big truck.' at that the look is simple and direct, short of braggadocio. the rest of the truck fulfills that impression. Direct and shaped by its function. Big square-shaped fender flares give it a look of rugged sportiness. But the titan's rear door opens not just to the near 90 degrees expected; it swings farther yet, yawning all the way open, flat against the truck's body. Wide-open they call it and it is. It's surprising how often this feature becomes useful. At the grocery store, it makes it much easier to maneuver a cart closely into position for unloading. This clever door design adds greatly to the king cab's utility. king cab models come with 6 1/2-foot beds. Crew cab models feature 5 1/2-foot beds, trading a foot of bed space for roomy back seats and more interior cargo room. With the tailgate lowered, the beds can accommodate 4x8-foot sheets of building material between the wheel housings. On 2wd titans it's about 34 inches, a big difference. Higher may be better in terms of machoism, but lower is better when loading heavy cargo. A 2wd chevy silverado appears to be the lowest in this regard. the optional sprayed-in bedliner looks terrific. The anti-skid surface keeps cargo from sliding around, prevents scratches and rust, and reduces noise. Unlike plastic drop-in liners, it doesn't trap moisture. Covered by the truck's warranty, the coating is applied at a $2 million facility specifically built for this purpose at nissan's spanking-new truck factory in mississippi. The anti-skid surface can make it harder to slide a box out, but this seems to be greatly outweighed by the upsides. the available c-channel tie-down system is designed to accommodate a variety of scenarios. It features c-section rails mounted in the bed, two on the floor, and one each on the side and forward walls of the bed. Removable cleats slide into the channels and can be positioned anywhere along its length thus permitting customized securing of cargo. Sliding cargo trays, a sliding tool box and other modular storage units are being designed by nissan for kayaks, bikes, and other needs. The bed channels feature protective caps that slide on to keep out debris when they're not being used. It appears to be a great system. an innovative storage compartment integrated into left rear fender is convenient for storing at tow-hitch ball, work gloves, road flares, or a first aid kit. Measuring 11x15 inches, this small bedside compartment is double sealed to be weather and dust proo. interiorthe titan interior manages to feel spacious and snug at the same time. The leather upholstery in the le models is sporty, attractive and quite pleasing; the rear seats in the le are covered in matching vinyl that most people will assume is leather. the bucket seats are firm and comfortable. The seat bottoms are relatively flat, making it easy to slide in and out, yet they offer good support and feel like they'd be comfortable on crosscountry trips. We find them more comfortable than the cushy seats in the gm trucks or those we've seen in the new ford f-150 which could use more side support. The driver's seat and passenger's seat are power adjustable. Memory and seat heaters are available. the king cab has 60/40 flip-up rear seats and the nearly flat floor beneath makes loading and toting a wide mix of people and things a breeze. Bottle holders are provided in the rear doors to keep back-seat riders contented. Flip up the rear seat bottoms and the king cab can carry a 160-pound dog in comfort. Hooks provided on the seat bottoms useful for hanging grocery bags, tote bags, or gear bags so their contents don't end up scattered around the floor. The real deal for off-road capability. introductionthe 2004 toyota 4runner shares almost nothing with the mid-size suvs toyota sold just two years ago. The 4runner was redesigned from the ground up for 2003, but its priorities haven't changed a bit. Everything from the basic design to the standard instrumentation and skid plates says this suv is capable of hard-core off-road work. while other suvs are becoming more and more like cars, the 4runner is the real deal. It's loaded with the latest off-road electronic technology, including hill start assist and downhill assist control. True to its truck roots, however, the 4runner is built on a rugged ladder frame with a solid rear axle. Optional features like a linked shock-absorber system have improved handling on the highway, and the standard v6 delivers more power for excellent acceleration. Order a 4runner limited with leather, heated seats and a killer stereo, and it feels like a poor man's range rover. Okay, to be politically correct, it's more like a poor person's land cruiser. toyota almost never naps. Even though the 4runner was brand new for 2003, the company has broadened its appeal for 2004 with an optional third seat that expands passenger capacity to seven. All models now come standard with running boards and more upscale body-colored bumpers and lower body cladding. For 2004, the optional gps navigation system includes a rear-mounted video camera for backing up. while the 4runner may seem old school to people who want an 'on-road' sport-utility, it's the hot ticket for drivers who want genuine off-road capability, but don't want to be punished for it on the way to work every day. lineupthe 2004 toyota 4runner comes in three trim levels: sr5, sport edition, and limited. A 4. 7-liter v8 is optional on all models 1,250). It generates 235 horsepower and, more important, 320 pounds-feet of torque. the sr5 is the most popular trim level, primarily because it's the least expensive and still very well equipped.
