All-new, the seventh generation of this best-seller is dazzling. introductionwe recently attended the introduction of the 2003 accord in hollywood, test driving all the models over the great roads of the malibu hills. We have seen the future, and it is impressive. But with the new accord, the champ has not only remade itself, it has re-invented a new self, without un-inventing the old self. The lx v6 comes with its own automatic. The ex coupe v6, a full-tilt sports sedan, comes with the automatic or a new six-speed manual transmission.  anti-lock brakes are standard on all models. Upscale options, depending on the model, may include leather power seats, a moonroof, alloy wheels, steering-wheel audio controls, side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a new voice-activated dvd navigation system programmed with some eight million destinations. This isn't easy to repeat without raised eyebrows; however its truth may be mostly a measure of what it means to be a mid-size sedan nowadays. The sedan and coupe share no sheetmetal whatsoever, although their faces do look alike. They feature a sharpened nose and angular headlamps, reminiscent of an acura rsx. The corners and sides of both bodies are carefully sculpted with a combination of concave and convex angles, in this attempt to achieve a muscular and agile look, with subtle and unique three-dimensional window glass, also intended to reduce wind noise.  there's been a vast and impressive amount of attention to detail in this redesign, with more new parts than in any of the previous five redesigns. For example, the aerodynamically efficient sideview mirrors are one of the results of the wind tunnel testing.  the drag coefficient is 0. 30, a big jump compared to 0. 33 in 2002. The length of 189. 5 inches is only 0. 1 inch longer than the '02 accord, but the wheelbase has been increased by one inch and width by 1. 2 inches. The bottom of the rear bumper has been lowered by one inch, and the sculpted wheelwells have a smaller gap around the tires. The roof has been raised by 0. 4 inch, but the car looks lower, thanks in part to a sleeker a pillar. The new roof allows more headroom: 0. 4 inch more in the front, 0. 8 inch in the rear.  cheetahs aside, the coupe is a completely different beast. Its flanks and rear deck are much more shapely, flowing naturally and gracefully from the roofline. Its dimensions are virtually identical to the '02 coupe, but the high beltline, sweeping door lines, sleek roofline and smooth rear fenders give it striking good looks, especially in red. It yields a very aerodynamic 0. 29 drag coefficient (0. 32 last year) and makes even the upscale acura cl look dated (a problem to be solved by a new cl, in the works).  under the skin, the new unibody is 27 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity, which honda boasts makes it stiffer than the bmw 3 series, audi a4 and a6, and even the mercedes s-class. The doors are built using a new and unique method, invented for the accord that makes them lighter and much stronger than before. And feel it in the extremely light touch to open the trunk.  a new front subframe, with hydroformed elements (a state-of-the-art method to create complex shapes from high-strength steel), is designed to reduce noise and vibration from the engine and front suspension. It's also designed to slide back a few inches under the passenger compartment in a head-on crash, which better dissipates forces.  there's also a sophisticated new engine mounting system, designed not only reduce vibration and tighten handling, but to complement the subframe's crash behavior. Honda engineers are particularly proud of the fact that the 2003 accord with side airbags is expected to achieve the industry's five-star crash rating in front, rear and side collisions, along with only the more expensive volvo s60 and lexus is300.  . interiorthe mission was an interior designer's dream. The sedan and coupe seats are different, with the coupe's bolstering providing a more secure fit at the torso, and a lower seating position. The cushion, springs and new urethane padding are all intended to reduce vibration. The vertical travel in the manual lx seat, with lever operation, has been increased by 1. 5 inches, a nice touch for women. The steering wheel has been angled more toward the driver and raised almost an inch. It tilts as before, and now telescopes as well, by 1. 5 inches.  the space below the steering wheel and instrument panel was enlarged, and the foot room increased. But in the rear, the new front seats seem to have a mixed effect; there's slightly more knee clearance, but overall leg room has been reduced by 1. 1 inches to 36. 8 inches. That's 1 inch less than the 2002 toyota camry, but 0. 4 more than the nissan altima and 1. 5 inches more than the volkswagen passat.  compared to these cars, the accord sedan trunk comes up small, with a volume of 14 cubic feet, although the flat floor will make it very easy to load things. The camry has 17 cubic feet, altima 16 and passat 15. The coupe looks more like a cheetah. Its trunk holds 13 cubic feet.  the excellent, clear analog instrumentation is also all new, with large faces and led illumination, another feature previously found only in higher-priced cars. There's dual-zone climate control on some ex models. The switchgear, primarily three big dials located in the center of the dash, is simple, if not particularly attractive. However the faux carbon fiber trim on one of the models we drove looked nice, while the brushed aluminum on other models wasn't bad either.  the simple big switchgear is a result of the successful search for efficient use of space, with the audio, climate and optional navigation systems integrated into a single unit. The freed space leads to exceptional cabin storage, including a good glovebox, big center console, bin under the audio system that will hold 12 cds, and door pockets deep and wide enough for a purse.  all three sound systems are upgraded, featuring stuff like two-band compression and five-point parametric equalization, which sounds nice, pun intended. But here's the real-world test: we took the v6 coupe six-speed on a flat-out blast through the malibu hills, engine revving to redline, windows wide open, cd celebrating bob marley, and even with the exterior noise, max volume on the sound system wasn't necessary for the full effect.  the attention to detail shows in every corner: coinholders, cellphone cord hooks, grab handles over every door, console lights, power outlets, sunglass holders, sliding armrests for different-sized arms, convenient and versatile access to. All-new lineup sets new standards for compacts. introductionit's hard to find a more competitive new car market than the compact class. And it's more than just price, as the number of entries has skyrocketed in recent years.  honda once led the class, in every measure that mattered, from performance to price to quality to pizzazz. And just as important image-wise, honda led the hot, sport compact niche. With the redesigned, restyled, rejuvenated 2006 honda civic models, the company has returned to the fray with renewed energy.  across the line, there's more power, improved ride and handling, and better people packaging. There are more choices as well: a sporty new civic si coupe, a fully populated tier of coupes and sedans with new engines and transmissions, and a more efficient and effective hybrid sedan. In between there's a sedan listing at $15,560 with the new five-speed automatic. The si starts at $20,290. There are other cars in the class that undercut these figures, but the civic includes important safety features, including antilock brakes and side-impact airbags as standard equipment, that many others leave on the option list. lineuphonda doesn't hold back when it comes to fleshing out a model line. A performance-oriented coupe, the si, comes with a 197-horsepower, 2. 0-liter inline-4 fitted with a six-speed manual. Standard equipment is confined to power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat. Added to the no-extra-charge features on the lx are power moonroof; variable windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; a seven-speaker, 350-watt, xm-ready, premium stereo with auxiliary input jack and steering wheel-mounted controls; and outside temperature indicator. There are few options available and honda positions its options packages and automatic transmissions as separate models, so for example, there is the civic coupe ex with navigation and automatic transmission 21,010) and the similarly equipped sedan version 20,760).  the si coupe 20,290) comes with all the gear found on the lx coupe plus leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, amber-tinted headlight trim rings and a body-colored rear wing spoiler. The lx and ex hfp package for the coupe 3183) and sedan 3680) substitutes 17-inch alloy wheels, drops the muffler and adds a rear spoiler. Installation costs extra and is set by dealers. walkaroundhonda re-did everything for 2006. Not only are powertrains updated and upgraded, and a new platform developed, but the sheetmetal is new. Not a single body panel is carried over from 2005.  the sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. And trim elements and markings distinguish each iteration.  the platform underneath is new for 2006, seriously strengthened in rigidity, stiffness and crash absorption capacities, with minor adjustments to accommodate the varying dimensions of the coupe and sedan body styles. As part of its campaign to revitalize the civic's appeal to the sport compact market, honda has incorporated reinforced mounting points and gussets to allow suspension and certain other modifications without diminishing body integrity.  from the front, styling differences are subtle, but marked. A polished, horizontal bar dominates the sedan grille. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille appears more open, with the honda logo suspended on a matte-black framework. An understated badge tucked away in the far right reaches of the grille identifies the sporty si version. The coupe headlights are more sharply outlined. The lower air intake opens between two, geometric recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps.  the front ends, but especially the coupes', push the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the 2006's wider track (the distance side to side between the tires), which grows by more than an inch in front and by more than two inches in back over the 2005's.  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the new civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the design concept of 'cab forward' to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees, markedly steeper than the '05's 26. 7 degrees, even exceeding the acura nsx's 23. 9 degrees. And the sedan's matches the nsx's, dropping from the '05's 29. 1 degrees. The sail (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model as well. The coupe's forms an acute angle emphasizing the two-door body style, while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and chopped off tail end adds perceived mass to the tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top, all very bmw-like in presence. interiorif the 2006 civic's exterior is new, the '06's interior borders on shocking. First impression of the instrument arrangement is of a video game. Controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Ironically, perhaps, the interiors are indistinguishable across the full line, with only minor differences necessitated by the different powertrains.  splayed across the top of the seemingly unending dash in front of the driver is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for the instrument panel, in the half circle formed by the top half of the steering wheel, that is, there's a large, round, analog tachometer. To each side of this lower ip are large, irregular vent registers. Centered in the dash above the climate control panel is either an lcd window combining the navigation display and audio settings and, in the hybrid, a selection of graphic depictions of the hybrid system's functions and status or a stereo control head with the pertinent accoutrements. To the right of this squished pod-like arrangement, the dash curves away from the front seat passenger and houses two, more horizontally oriented vent registers, again neither of which matches the other. A wide, but not especially deep glove box rests below a cabin-wide, clam shell-like notch dividing the upper and lower halves of the dash.  there is no center stack to speak of tying together the dash and the drive tunnel.

A baby lexus for the rest of us. introductiontoyota says the corolla has been the world's best-selling car when measured over the past 35 years. Apparently, that wasn't good enough. Yet both are essentially identical under the skin. Ce comes standard with a manual transmission; an automatic is optional 14,370).  s 14,515 with manual gearbox, $15,315 with automatic transmission) features sporty styling cues such as smoked headlight lens extenders, integrated fog lamps, and an aerodynamic body package with color-keyed front and rear underbody spoilers, rocker panel extensions, and rear mud guards. It also gets wider 195/65r15 tires. Inside, the s gets a unique cloth interior, a sporty tachometer, chrome accents, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The s model gets a vertical seat-height, power door locks, and map lights.  le 14,680 or $15,480 with the automatic) adds remote keyless entry, power windows, and intermittent wipers. The le lacks the sporty body cladding of the s. And in place of the s model’s sporty interior finish, the le gets wood-like trim and upgraded cloth seating surfaces. An optional leather package is available 1,050, which includes a sunroof) for the le that gives the car a luxurious feel. walkaroundat first sight the new corolla actually looks smaller than the one it replaces. However, it is over three inches taller while having the same width as the old model, hence the impression of being smaller.  ironically, in photographs the new corolla looks bigger than it does in real life and could easily be mistaken for a camry or even a lexus. It has similar ovoid headlights and a rakish yet curved shape that is in keeping with the newest camry and avalon as well as the lexus es 300.  fairly thick a-pillars at the front and c-pillars at the rear give the car a solid look. Likewise, the corolla has fairly hefty looking bumpers, which add to the car's substantial appearance. Although the new corolla has 15-inch wheels (compared to 14-inch wheels on the previous corolla), it could do with larger wheels and tires that would fill out the wheels wells more effectively. The matrix comes with 16-inch wheels as standard and 17-inch as optional so it seems like it would be an easy upgrade that would improve the car's looks.  at the rear the corolla has a fairly high trunk line in keeping with the car's high belt line. The rear taillights match the shape of the headlights nicely. Part of the taillight module is actually mounted in the trunk lid. This is fine except that the design causes the trunk lid to be narrower than it might be.  the doors have reasonably wide openings, which makes getting in and out easier. That's a benefit of the long wheelbase, which also means that the rear wheel wells do not protrude into the rear door as much as they do on some cars. Another benefit of a longer wheelbase is shorter overhangs at the front and rear (the distance from the wheels to the ends of the car). Short overhangs improve the car's looks, and the handling.  the s model has additional body-color moldings that set it apart as the sporty model. These include a lower front spoiler with integrated fog lights, side rocker panels and a rear under skirt. interiorthe interior is where the corolla really shines. Inside, it doesn't feel like a small car, and it doesn't feel cheap. The center console and portions of the armrest on the door panels have a wood-like veneer trim. Okay it's fake but it's so well made that it looks more realistic than some real wood found in luxury cars. Both the le and s models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel as standard.  for most people though front-seat leg and headroom is just fine and there's a decent amount of room in the back for two average size adults. Although there are seat belts for a third rear-seat passenger, there's definitely a shortage of space for that person. Materials used in the seats appear classy with nice fit and finish. It is nicely laid out and its finish is as good as that in all but the most expensive luxury cars. Coupled with the nice finish, it makes the corolla feel more like a small lexus, especially if one opts for the leather seats. It has a top surface that sweeps across the width of the car in a slight s-curve and wraps into the door trim. Each side of the center console seamlessly blends up to the lower portion of the dash, which includes a large glove box on the passenger side. The handle for the parking brake is located on the left of the center console so there's room for a small storage cubbyhole on the right.  three overlapping round gauges in the instrument pod contain a large speedometer, a smaller tachometer to the left and a water temperature gauge and fuel gauge mounted in a matching circle to the right. They incorporate red lettering on a plain white background. There's also an outside temperature readout on all models.  storage spaces are quite generous with small pockets in each door and cubbyholes in the center console. The rear seats split 60/40 to allow access from the trunk, though the opening is not that large, limiting pass-through with large cargo. On the other hand it's a sedan so it is not supposed to have the hauling capacity or convenience of a hatchback or station wagon. The trunk is a reasonable size although once again gooseneck hinges intrude into the cargo space and also crush fragile items if they are in the way. Many auto manufacturers have switched to the scissor-type hinges that are located outside the storage space. Quite why toyota and other japanese manufacturers have not switched to this design remains surprising.  all in all the interior has a high level of refinement beyond what one expects in a low cost sub-compact. On the safety side all corollas come with multi-stage front airbags. While side curtain airbags are offered as an option on all models. driving impressionone word sums up the driving experience in the new corolla: transparent. That's a benefit to those who don't particularly enjoy driving. But it's not supposed to be. It includes a shift logic system that helps hold a gear longer than it might otherwise if it senses the car is going up an incline or the driver wants plenty of power while passing.  the power steering is just right, providing a nice feel without being too stiff or sloppy. The suspension has been tuned to give a smooth ride, which is helped by the longer wheelbase compared to the previous generation. Body roll has been minimized and the car feels secure at all speeds. Those who enjoy the crisp handling of a sports sedan will find the car's suspension a little too soft. These drivers may want to opt for the matrix, which does have a slightly stiffer more sporty suspension.  for those who enjoy doing their ow.
