Part of the reason is that the old 5. 2-liter v8 engine has been replaced with an all-new 4. 7-liter overhead cam v8. The minor loss in acceleration is offset by the refinement of the new engine. It accelerates smoothly, with none of the mechanical grumbling and rude roaring of the previous 5. 2-liter and 5. 9-liter engines. We'd call the big jeep more mature. walkaroundthe new jeep grand cherokee is 3 inches longer than the one it replaces, but its wheelbase is the same. It looks taller, bowed on top with a forehead look to the front of the roof. Its round lines look like paul bunyan took his sanding block to the previous sharp body creases. underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles, like the previous model. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions, but jeep's live axle is only a drawback on paper, as we note later. The jeep retains its unibody integrated truck frame-and-body design. This rare design strategy -- shared by the smaller jeep cherokee and the nissan pathfinder -- results in a grand cherokee that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. With adjustments for similar equipment, jeep says the new grand cherokee is about 50 pounds lighter overall. Less weight and a tighter turning radius help make the bigger jeep more maneuverable. two engines are offered. Jeep's 4. 0-liter inline-6 has been re-engineered for 1999. It's quieter, cleaner and more powerful, producing 195 horsepower -- up 10 horsepower from last year. a new 4. 7-liter v8 is optional. With single overhead cams on each cylinder bank, it produces 235 horsepower, or 15 horsepower more than the previous 5. 2-liter pushrod v8. Torque is down slightly, which accounts for the diminished acceleration. two familiar trim levels are available, laredo and limited, each with a long list of standard features. base grand cherokees come with rear-wheel drive, but that seems like buying a louisville slugger just to hit rocks. Its simple but effective automatic locking center differential apportions torque to the front wheels whenever the rear wheels slip. the quadra-drive system is optional on both the 6-cylinder and v8 models. Quadra-drive is the same system as quadra-trac ii, but it adds hydraulically locking front and rear differentials. By using three differentials, the system automatically sends torque front-to-rear and side-to-side whenever a wheel slips. And all three systems come with a low-range set of gears that can be used for serious traction situations. interiorrear legroom is tight. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider. more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lay down under the load floor. Part of that impression comes from the high seating position. Controls and switches have been improved in feel and operation, including the jeep's once-balky turn signal/wiper combination stalk. the front seats have highly padded longitudinal ribs, and the thickness of the padding reminds us more of house furniture instead of serious off-roader benches. But no news is good news here. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, the jeep feels controlled and steady. The price for this capability is a tall, body-rolling ride. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee. steering is quick but isolated, despite a thorough restructuring of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. Like them, the jeep's still a truck, sitting tall, rolling side to side in corners and high winds. the biggest improvement in the ride of the new grand cherokee is a newfound tendency to stay pointed straight ahead. A triangle link that replaces the panhard rod locating the rear axle is directly responsible for this improvement. careful tuning of suspension mounts, and even drivetrain mounts, allows the live axles of the jeep a lot of compliant movement. The axles move and pivot on large bumps and dirt holes where the independent suspensions of other suvs reach their limits of travel, and ultimately toss the occupants about inside. power is adequate with the new v8 and, aided by relatively light weight, the jeep feels faster and more responsive than most 6-cylinder suvs and the huge v8 tahoes and expeditions. One reason the spare was relocated to under the load floor was to give more visibility rearward. That's what it did for us. The grand cherokee requires fewer try-and-fail attempts to conquer obstacles. It's tougher to upset than any high-volume wagon (hummers and land rovers excepted).

The styling is actually quite dramatic with an aggressive grille and steeply raked windshield. It is a very attractive vehicle, making the boxes of the past look bland. the tracks for the sliding side doors are disguised under the rear side window for a cleaner appearance. The d-pillars and backlight (rear window) are steeply inclined for a sporty look, with a discrete spoiler added to the trailing edge of the roof. Flared wheel openings add strength to the appearance. Headlamps and taillamps are big, the latter wrapping around to the sides. The roof rack is hunkered close to the roof, stylistically less obtrusive and perhaps less likely to generate wind noise, but also offering less clearance for the thicker hooks of some tie-downs. at 200. 5 inches long and less than 5-feet, 10-inches tall, the caravan will fit just about where any full-size sedan will fit. interiordodge caravan's interior is comfortable and convenient. Caravan and grand caravan can accommodate seven passengers in a 2/2/3 arrangement. caravan and grand caravan offer a slightly higher seating position that enables even short drivers to see over traffic. Yet a rope isn't needed to climb into the seats, unlike suvs and some of the more truck-like minivans. The driver's seat could use more support in the seat bottom, however. the gauges are straightforward, big, round analog displays, a great basic design. The instruments feature light gray faces with black numerals that are not quite as legible as white on black; they illuminate in green at night. The dash is canted slightly forward; the designers claim this provides better visibility. Indicators for the turn signals and high beams are cleverly located in a thin hooded display above the instrument panel where they are easy to see. the steering wheel controls are among the best we've seen. Cruise controls are on the front of the steering wheel and allow precise control of the speed; an indicator on the dash tells the driver the system is on. Behind the steering wheel are audio controls that let the driver easily adjust volume, seek, switch among pre-set stations, and switch between am and fm bands. It's a brilliant design. controls for the sound system and hvac (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) are intuitive and easy to use. However, the audio system's on-off/volume knob is obscured by the gearshift lever when in drive and the separate button on the radio for setting a preset seems less convenient than the traditional method of holding the button down. Three-zone temperature controls allow the driver and front-seat passenger to set their own comfort levels and there's a separate control for the rear of the cabin for the kids to fight over. access to the rear sets of seats is easy, much easier than in a sport-utility. Power sliding doors, available for one or both sides work very well. The driver can operate them by pressing buttons on the dash or on the keyless remote. The second-row passengers can operate them by pressing a switch on the b-pillar, but that can be overridden by the driver. The second-row buckets make the second-row passengers as comfortable as the front-seat passenger. the third-row bench provides room for two adults rather admirably, but is a bit short of shoulder room for three adult males. The split rear is easier to remove because the two seats are easier to lift out individually than a big, heavy bench seat. the seats are easy to remove. They come loose in three steps and can be rolled out on rollers to facilitate conversion of the van from people mover to cargo hauler. One person can do it, but they are heavy, so it's easier on the back to have a little help moving them from the van to the garage. With both rows of seats removed, the grand caravan can haul 4x8-foot sheets of plywood. That's 16 cubic feet more than the shorter caravan. cup holders are everywhere. The grand caravan is brimming with cupholders, the third row of seats having multiple holders for drinks of different shapes. They handle well with responsive steering and are stable at speed. Dodge has worked to reduce wind noise by adding underhood padding, using better gaskets between the outside mirrors and the body and around outside and inside door handles. Roof rack crossbows were designed in a wind tunnel to reduce wind noise. It has paid off, though there is still some wind noise. handling for most minivan owners is how well the vehicle maneuvers in a parking lot and tracks down the highway rather than how fast it can slalom through a series of cones. So we tested it in parking lots and discovered that it had a small enough turning radius to get into parking spaces easily. However, with the front corners of the van blocked by the cowl, it wasn't always easy to tell where the front really was. It was easy to tell where the rear was, on the other hand, but the height of the windows blocked the view of cars or other low objects. This is typical of most minivans, and something that one must learn to live with. the grand caravan delivers strong power when equipped with the 3. 8-liter v6. That's useful for merging onto a crowded, fast-moving freeway, for quickly accelerating away from intersections, and for passing on two-lane roads. This engine is rated at 215 horsepower, but more importantly, can generate 245 pound-feet of torque. We recommended it for anyone regularly carrying a heavy lo. A stylish suv with serious off-road capability. introductionif sales figures are anything to go by, nissan understands the dynamics of the sport-utility vehicle market. It skillfully reacted to recent changes in the market by redesigning its pathfinder for 1996. As it enters a third model year, the nissan pathfinder can be considered a solid success. There have been minimal alterations to standard equipment and prices have remained relatively constant. life was simpler when the original pathfinder was introduced. At the time, it was little more than a nissan pickup truck with a glorified camper shell added. But it gave nissan entry into the then-small sport-utility brigade. competition has grown since those days, as have customer expectations. The suspension was designed to handle streets and trails alike. It's equipped with all the comforts of a loaded midsize sedan along with the spaciousness of a station wagon. Getting those disparate virtues to coexist in a single vehicle is a tall order. it is an order filled, to varying degrees, by a number of suvs. Competing in the pathfinder's class are the jeep cherokee, ford explorer/mercury mountaineer, isuzu rodeo, honda passport, gmc jimmy, chevy blazer and oldsmobile bravada. Though similar in purpose, each attempts to meet customer needs in distinctive ways. walkaroundnissan designed the pathfinder to look less like a truck than the first generation. Rounded corners and passenger-car proportions serve the pathfinder well, as do curved roof pillars and horizontal body creases that emphasize length. The rear door handles are camouflaged in the c-pillars. And all elements of the pathfinder's exterior design are clean, efficient and attractive. three trim levels comprise the pathfinder line-up: base xe, se and le. The se and le carry more bright trim than most passenger cars; grilles, bumper tops and running boards are plated or polished. Equivalent pieces on xe models are black, creating an immediately apparent distinction between the models. Shift-on-the-fly capability allows the driver to do this while the pathfinder is in motion. A low-range transfer case is provided for radical rock climbing. pathfinders run the gamut from relatively basic to fully loaded. All have a v6 engine, abs, air conditioning, am/fm/cd stereo system and a rear washer/wiper as standard equipment. The loaded le comes with power windows/mirrors/door locks, leather seats and other convenience features. The other two models offer some of these features as options. ordering these extras is easy. Most of the desirable add-ons can be grouped in packages. A convenience package brings the xe within shouting distance of the le, a sport package adds trim--and a limited-slip rear differential for 4x4 models. The se can be ordered with leather upholstery and/or a sunroof. Granted, the seats are higher off the ground than they would be in a nissan altima, but the dashboard, seats and other trim pieces seem to have been selected for looks rather than hose-it-out-when-dirty utility. The speedometer, tachometer, water temperature and fuel level gauges are large and big buttons are used for the necessary functions. Sensible rotary dials operate the climate control system. The radio buttons are a little too small, and the electric mirror switches are hidden from view by the wheel, but nissan's designers have done their work well. a quiet, comfortable environment is one of the pathfinder's greatest assets. The seats are as accommodating as they appear to be. Plush pile carpeting is underfoot; se and le trim levels offer higher quality carpeting than the xe. An excellent heating/ventilation/air conditioning system keeps interior temperatures at the desired level. This pleasant environment is complemented with generous cargo space. on the debit side, taller occupants may find a little less headroom than they'd like, and adults sitting in the rear seats will wish for more legroom. all pathfinders come well equipped, especially se and le trim levels. We prefer cloth upholstery in the se--especially when climbing in on cold winter mornings. Seat heaters help warm the seats quickly. Shorter occupants will find the step up into the cabin a high one, even when accessory step rails are fitted. On the plus side, the nissan is quiet, a benefit of the pathfinder's rigid unitized structure and well-placed sound insulation. It's also easy to drive. Soft springs and generous wheel travel smooth out all but the worst bumps. In hard cornering, the body leans a fair amount, but this is common to the sport-utility breed. The steering strikes a nice balance between precision and low effort. the pathfinder performs well even when packed with a full load of passengers and cargo. The engine is responsive and quiet and it's strong enough to pull a 5000-pound trailer. At high altitudes it doesn't have the passing power of some of its competitors. the base 5-speed manual transmission shifts well, but we consider the 4-speed automatic (standard with the le package) a better all-around match to the pathfinder's character. It upshifts smoothly and downshifts responsively, which makes city driving easy. Automatics are preferred by many experienced drivers for off-road use. the pathfinder copes as well with sand, mud and snow as it does with pavement. Traction was never a problem, nor was stability--even when the side of a sand dune proved steeper than it looked. sport-utility vehicles are not noted for fuel efficiency. Style, quality and comfort are provided in abundance, combined with the stance and the hardware of a traditional go-anywhere vehicle. the base price is attractive and the xe comes with all the basic necessities, but most pathfinders will break the $25,000 barrier with ease. The tab goes even higher for 4x4 models with leather interiors. it's a matter of common sense and dollars and cents.
