Traditional american luxury values from toyota. introductionin toyota's own words, the avalon is a 'move up vehicle for midsize sedan owners seeking a roomier cabin and a higher level of refinement.' succinct and to the point. By comparison, the es300 lists for $30,790, while the 328i is $33,670. Its design is a departure from that of the toyota camry. In fact, the avalon looks more like a buick than a toyota. And it's built in kentucky. Park it beside a camry, and the avalon looks like the family patriarch-bigger, more formal than the camry. when toyota's avalon debuted in 1994, it set the standard for comfort, quality and refinement in the large car segment. Though no changes are visible, the avalon has been refined for 1998. the chassis was extensively reinforced to improve rigidity, enhance crashworthiness, and reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Side-impact airbags were added to complement the energy absorbing door structures. a revised grille along with new jeweled multi-reflector headlights give the front of the car a new look. Turn signals are now located behind a clear lens next to the headlights for improved appearance and quality of fitment. at the other end there is a new trunk lid that is nine inches wider than before for easier loading and unloading. A lip on the trailing edge acts as a rear spoiler. But it also had the $1,555 leather trim package, which includes memory for the driver's seat and heat for both seats. The optional moonroof added $980 to the sticker. inside, the avalon looks every bit the luxury car it was designed to be. The carpet is thick, the leather creamy to touch, the instrument panel well designed. There is wood trim on the dash, console and door panels. A dual power-operated 50/50 front bench seat is available to accommodate up to six passengers. It comes with a fold-down center armrest and a column-mounted shifter. Interior colors include ivory, quartz and black. A keyless entry system is standard that prevents the engine from being started unless the correct key is used. A transponder chip in the key sends an identification code to the engine's electronic control unit (ecu). If the code matches the one stored in the ecu, the system is deactivated. because of that long list of standard features, the options list is short: leather, power driver's seat with memory, traction control, cd player and a moonroof. driving impressionuntil the avalon, the words toyota and luxury didn't go together. Toyota and quality, toyota and value, toyota and performance, sure. But not toyota and luxury. Luxury was lexus territory. So the first impression from behind the wheel is one of delight, because this is indeed a luxury car. The transmission shifts are smooth--even at full throttle. when it settles down for quiet cruising, the avalon feels like a luxury car. The ride is comfortable. For many people, front-wheel drive has changed their confidence in inclement weather. Add traction control and some drivers begin to take slippery conditions for granted. Traction control works well, reduces the effect human error and inspires confidence. But, as with anti-lock brakes (abs), drivers should not let technology replace sensible driving technique. The laws of physics still apply. when the traction control system detects even the slightest loss of traction, it instantly reduces torque to the slipping wheel. The driver's role is to let up on the gas until traction is returned. we activated the system several times, sometimes on purpose, sometimes when we applied too much power on a slippery road. Each time, power was instantly reduced and control was regained. Slippery, low-speed corners present a traction problem, but traction control reduces the chance that the rear end of the car will lose traction and cause the car to spin. No matter how much throttle is used, the system will only apply the amount of power that the front wheels can accept without spinning. It does everything well. the avalon gls is packed with goodies. Empty-nesters will appreciate avalon for its flexibility, and families for its manageable base price, which includes a good stereo with cd changer and most of the features anyone really needs. avalon also has the latest safety technology, starting with a full complement of front, side and head-protection airbags. It scores well in government and insurance-industry crash tests. And in addition to the now-standard vsc skid-management electronics, it comes with traction control and an ant-lock brake system (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. These features make sure that stopping power is distributed evenly, regardless of road surface, and that the brakes apply with full force in a panic stop. it all makes avalon easy to like and even easier to enjoy. The avalon limited upgrades with unique, sound dampening glass in the windshield. the limited mirrors also include a couple model specific features, starting with led turn signals that are visible to other drivers in the glass. For 2008, it received what the car industry calls a mid-cycle update, or noticeable styling tweaks that are as extensive as a car usually gets between complete redesigns. The 2009 model looks identical to the '08. in front, the grille and bumper are trimmed with horizontal chrome bars, with fog lamps integrated into the lower bumper on xls and limited models. In side view, subtle character lines below the windows and above the door sills add a hint of sculpting to the avalon's flanks. It's quiet, well-crafted and more than spacious, and we'd rank it at the top of its class. The cabin contributes to the avalon's serene ambience, and from the functional perspective it's first rate. materials are generally good quality. A few trim pieces, such as silver-painted plastic parts and the housing around the steering column, demonstrate that avalon is not an extra-expensive luxury car. But the fit of the various parts and panels is impeccable, and overall avalon's interior feels like quality. Even the extra-glossy, wood-grain trim toyota designers seem so fond of looks pretty good inside the avalon. the front seats are big, fairly flat and comfortable. They're an excellent compromise between adequate adjustment and too many things to fiddle with. The avalon limited features a fan in the seat cushion and seatback that blows air through the perforated leather trim to improve comfort. the steering wheel tilts and telescopes over a substantial range, and it's wrapped with leather on all but the base avalon xl. The wheel spokes have buttons to adjust audio and climate settings, and they're also a great compromise: big and easy to find, but not confusing. Wipers and lights follow toyota's familiar pattern, with the light switch on the left stalk and wipers on the right. Its so-called optitron gauges are large, crisp and easy to see through the top half of the steering wheel. The large lcd informational display is located right in the center of the dash, above the switch stack. Those most frequently adjusted, including the tuner and volume control, are bigger than the knobs in most other cars. The six-cd changer is standard in all avalons, and so is an audio jack to connect ipods or other mp3 players. The upgrade jbl audio package adds bluetooth capability and 360 watts of output. It sounds fantastic, though we could certainly live with the standard stereo. the primary temperature, air flow and fan adjustment knobs are huge, located on either side of the stereo and prominently back-lit in pastel turquoise that reminds us of miami beach. They operate with a firm, steady action, and they're nearly impossible to miss when the driver reaches a hand from the steering wheel. the sunroof button and overhead light switch are located above the rearview mirror, with a drop-down sunglasses holder. One omission is avalon's lack of individual reading lights for front seat passengers, and the omission glares more because the interior is generally so nice. Buttons for the seat warmers are dials offering a range of heat intensity, located on the center console next to the ge.
